Newcastle

Newcastle is an excellent location for orienteering, with plenty of variety in the city. From the open rough land of the Town Moor to the smooth grass of Leazes Park, and the wooded slopes of Jesmond Dene to the picturesque scenes of the quayside, there are a wealth of opportunities for training.

Orienteering areas within 20 minutes walk of the university campus are:

  • Leazes Park
  • Exhibition Park and Town Moor
  • Nuns Moor
  • Jesmond Dene
  • Ouseburn

Orienteering first took place in Newcastle in 1977, when the Town Moor was first mapped. This has since been updated several times, and is the closest venue to the campus for orienteering.

Venturing further afield, the regional forests and woodland include Chopwell, Slayey, Hamsterley, and Thrunton. Open moorland for both orienteering and fell running is easily accessible from Newcastle with the Cheviots, North Pennines, and North Yorkshire Moors all within an hour.
