The British University and College Sports (BUCS) competition is the main competition of the racing calendar. There are three races during the academic year
The Cross Country Championships is usually held the first Saturday of February and hosted by a different university each year. This year the event is going to be held in Gloucester, hosted by the University of Gloucester. Previous years have included Brighton, Stirling, Leeds, Cardiff and Birmingham.
The Championships are split into a men’s and a women’s race. The Men’s race is further split into an A and a B race. BUCS Points are given to the top 8 individual finishes and then the top 8 teams. The Men’s A race is usually around 12km and each university is only allowed to enter 6 men as part of their team, with the first 4 for each team being a team counter. The women’s race is approximately 6km with unlimited entrances. The first 3 women are counters for each university. The Men’s B race has unlimited entrance although none of the finishers receive BUCS Points. The B race is approximately 8km.
In the Saturday evening a social is organised by the hosting university, which has become tradition for NUAXC member’s to undertake a series of challenges!
The Indoor Championships is the first of two athletic competitions for the year and held at the end of February at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. The competition starts on Friday afternoon with the 60m and 60m Hurdles and concludes with the relays on Sunday afternoon. Each university is limited to two entrants per event. Each race is usually made up of heats, semi-finals and finals with field events having qualifiers and then finals. The top 8 finishers of each event are award BUCS Points.
The second athletics competition of the year, the Outdoor Championships are held at Bedford International Stadium on the first bank holiday of May. This competition was used as the test event for the Olympic Stadium in 2012, so gave athletes the unique experience of being the first to use the track and the facilities. Similar format to the Indoor Championships, the competitions offers a full programme of outdoor events.
