{"id":26,"date":"2015-09-22T23:33:33","date_gmt":"2015-09-22T23:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.societies.ncl.ac.uk\/unoc\/?page_id=26"},"modified":"2017-10-02T19:19:51","modified_gmt":"2017-10-02T18:19:51","slug":"orienteering","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.societies.ncl.ac.uk\/unoc\/orienteering\/","title":{"rendered":"Orienteering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Orienteering is an outdoor adventure sport which involves navigating around a course on foot by using a detailed map and compass. \u00a0The aim is to navigate in sequence between a set of control points,\u00a0and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.\u00a0\u00a0It does not matter what age or level of fitness you are at, as you can run, jog, or walk the course and progress at your own pace.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Xperience orienteering\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qya4hrSKYJk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>Credit: <strong>joinOsports<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Orienteering takes place in a variety of locations, with courses typically taking you to places that you wouldn&#8217;t otherwise go to. \u00a0Events are held anywhere from remote forest and open moorland to parks, suburban areas and cities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.societies.ncl.ac.uk\/unoc\/files\/2015\/09\/orienteering.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.societies.ncl.ac.uk\/unoc\/files\/2015\/09\/orienteering-300x162.gif\" alt=\"orienteering\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastleorienteering.org.uk\">NATO<\/a>\u00a0(Newcastle and Tyneside Orienteers) are the local orienteering club, and offer plenty of events in the Newcastle area which the club attend. The other regional clubs are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.northern-navigators.org.uk\">NN<\/a>\u00a0(Northern Navigators) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.clok.org.uk\">CLOK<\/a>\u00a0(Cleveland Orienteering Klub), and the club travels to some of these events.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><b>Map Symbols<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Orienteering maps use their own special set of\u00a0symbols to represent the features and terrain within the mapped area:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.maprunner.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/resources\/Maprunner-map-symbols.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"917\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.maprunner.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/resources\/Maprunner-map-symbols.jpg<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As you become\u00a0familiar with these, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richtig-orientieren.de\/icd\/mst\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">test yourself<\/a>\u00a0to see how many you remember &#8211; this is a good way of learning them!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Control Descriptions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An orienteering map also includes\u00a0detailed descriptions of which features the controls that make up the course are located on.
