The Stan Calvert is the annual sporting competition between the Newcastle and Northumbria for bragging rights in Newcastle. Whilst the main event is across all BUCS Sports, NUAXC compete in a X-Country race and athletic events.
Whilst titled a cross country race there is no mud and hills but there is usually a howling wind. The Saturday of the Stan Calvert weekend sees both men and women line up for a mass start and run the 5km park run route. In the previous year however only the women lined up at the start with Northumbria not having a men’s cross country team.
The athletics event is held at Gateshead International Stadium, usually as part of the main Stan Calvert event. A series of indoor events are fought over for half a point per event before moving onto the outdoor track for more half a point events and finishing with the relays. Previous years have seen the uni and poly go to battle over shot putt, high jump, long jump, triple jump, 60m, 400m, 1500m and relays. However the previous year saws a much reduced programme with no field events and a much reduced track programme. The events competed last year were:
- 60m men and women
- 800m men
- 4 x 400m
- 4 x 100m
