Welcome to Newcastle

The University Women's International Group (UWIG), is a voluntary organisation run by a group of university women for the benefit of families of overseas staff and post-graduate students at the University of Newcastle.  We offer friendship, hospitality, help and informal English classes. We offer our time on a voluntary and unpaid basis and there is no charge to you. We welcome children who are looked after in the presence of their mother; we have a lot of toys but we do not run a crèche.  (We regret we cannot accept those connected with other universities as members.)

Regular Events

UWIG meets at 20, Windsor Terrace, just around the corner from the Robinson Library.

Weekly Social Meetings in term-time

Tuesdays 10:30- 12:30hours

A subject of interest is chosen each week, such as cookery or craft demonstrations or a talk about other countries.

Light refreshments are provided and children are welcome.

Thursdays 09:45 - 12:00hrs.

Informal English Classes - students are grouped according to ability from "I don't know any English" to fluency .  We have experienced teachers and modern teaching materials.

Light refreshments are provided and children are welcome.  As you are learning English your children can be supervised and entertained while they play with our wide range of toys.

Occasional Outings

Each term a coffee morning is held at the home of one of our local members. Excursions are made on foot to local places of interest, such as the Hancock Museum or the Castle.  In the summer, we go further afield, for instance to Washington Wildlife Park.

Parties

Santa Claus visits our Christmas party for pre-school children. The Christmas Party for adults includes husbands and other UWIG supporters.

Details of the programme are shown on the page: "This Term's Programme"
