Editorial Policy


Who can contribute?

The e-Journal welcomes articles and reviews from:

- Graduates, staff and research associates within the School of Historical Studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

- Final year undergraduates within the School of Historical Studies

- Graduate researchers from neighbouring institutions in the Northeast of England

- Graduate researchers with an interest in the archaeology/history of the Northeast of England.

If you would like to submit a contribution, but do not belong to one of these categories, please contact the Secretary.

Style

Length - Contributions should be between 500 and 5,000 words in length and reviews should be between 500 and 1,000 words in length. Extended contributions will be considered but please contact the editors before submitting.

Format - Articles should be submitted in Word format (.doc) using Arial/Times New Roman font, point size 12, and should be accompanied by a brief abstract. Sentences should be single spaced. Italics may be used for emphasis and for uncommon or foreign words. Abbreviations: Full titles of states, organisations and similar should be used in the first instance.

Language - The online journal aims at a mixed audience. Therefore, please avoid specialised language where possible and define your terms. Use non-discriminatory language at all times.


Referencing

All submissions should be fully referenced using the Harvard System and should include a complete bibliography, alphabetically ordered, of all sources cited.

Illustrations

Authors are encouraged to make full use of the advantages of online publication. Please use subheadings and try to include maps, figures or photographs to illustrate points. Images and photographs should be submitted separately via email, and saved as either 'jpegs', 'bitmaps' or 'gifs' ('jpegs' preferred). If images are seperate from text, label every image and identify its position. Please refer to copyright regulations before submitting any images.

We offer full support for those who would like to utilise less conventional methods for publication, for example animation and audio. If you would like to include these within your contribution, please contact the Editor in Chief as soon as possible.


Copyright

Web publishing is subject to the same copyright legislation as paper based publishing, and any potential contributor is asked to bear this in mind.

The author warrants that the work is original, that it has not been published elsewhere and that it does not infringe any copyrights owned by other parties. All images submitted to the committee must either be copyrighted to the author, or come accompanied with the express written permission of the copyright owner.

Submission Procedure

Contributors are asked to submit their work in in digital format via email to a member of the Editorial Committee. In addition, contributors are reminded to provide a short abstract (not more than 150 words) for their paper, preferrably with a fitting thumbnail image (see image copyright statement). All contributions will be scrutinised by the Editorial Committee, who reserve the right to reject or alter any contribution. The author will be notified of proposed editorial changes prior to publication. The publication date will be set by the Editorial Committee.
