Useful Links

The following is a small collection of links and information which may be useful when creating your site.

The list is not exhaustive, the links are provided as examples and guides. If you need further information, Google is always a good place to start.

HTML

(X)HTML is a markup language which allows you to identify the structure of your pages. It is basically a combination of plain text and markup tags. HTML files can be produced using standard text editors (like Notepad), or more advanced tools (like Dreamweaver).

PHP

PHP is a server side scripting language. It allows you to build dynamic, flexible websites. It requires a greater level of technical ability than simple HTML. The Societies server currently runs version 4.3.2.

MySQL

MySQL is used to provide our web database service. You must register to use MySQL - it is not included in your web publishing registration.

CSS

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) allow you to separate your content from your markup, in order to (amongst other things) make your site easier to manage.

Open Source Web Design

If you have some content but aren't really confident with designing your own pages, there are some online resources where designers make templates available for you to use.

If you download and use one of these templates, you should remember to respect any conditions of use (such as crediting the original author).

Forums

We do not allow Societies to install forums on our servers for a number of reasons. Instead, we aim to provide workable alternatives for you to achieve the same functionality:
