Islamic Society

The Islamic society whose proper name is The University of Newcastle Islamic Society was established in the 1970. It was formed as a society which is affiliated under the Union Society of the University of Newcastle. It is run under constitution and led by an Executive Committee consisting of a President and six members.

The University has kindly allocated for us a space, which is located at King George VI Building (also knows as Old Medical School Bldg), that we use as a Mosque, where most of the activities of the society are carried out. In the University Mosque daily prayers, Jum'ah prayers, study circles in different languages, talks and lectures are held. In Ramadan, Iftar is provided and Taraweeh prayers are held throughout the whole month. The Society also organises sports, social and cultural programmes besides visits to places of interest. Eid-ul-fitr and Eid-ul-Adha are also celebrated. Public lectures are held occasionally.

The Islamic Society also send your donations that you put in the boxes available to those in need through different charity organisations in Britain. Riba (interest) box is also available for those who would like to get rid of Riba money. However, this does mean that the Islamic Society encourages brothers and Sisters to take interest from banks and Building societies.

Full Membership is open to all full-time students and staff of Newcastle University and Northumbria University and their spouses. Non students, students of Newcastle Colleges and part-time students may become Associate Members.

There are several advantages of being a member in the Islamic society. You will have the right to vote during the annual elections. You can open an account to use the copy machine in the library of the mosque. You will be eligible to borrow from the wide selection of Islamic books in the Mosque Library. The books are in different languages (English, Arabic, Malay, Turkish, Urdu, Bengali, etc.). You will be eligible, in case of personal hardship may Allah forbid, to apply to the hardship committee to get the amount of money that makes you overcome the hardship. In addition, you will increase the budget of the Islamic Society, because for every member the students union gives a fixed amount of money to our society.

Throughout the year a number of activities are held and all Brothers and sisters are encouraged to participate in all of them.

For sisters, a room is available to perform the daily prayers. However, due to the shortage of space on Fridays, sisters can not attend Friday prayers.

There are a number of sutdy circles run in the mosque in different languages:

  • International Study Circle for Brothers, every Wednesday after Asr prayer, in English.
  • International Study Circle for Sisters, every Thursday evening, in English.
  • Arabic Study Circle for Brothers, every Friday evening.
  • Arabic Study Circle for Sisters, every Wednesday morning (11am).
IN addition to these there are a number of other study circles which are held in other languages during different days of the week. All Brothers and Sisters are invited to attend any of these circles. Please note that the times of these study circles may vary, depending on the seasons.
