Who we are
Newcastle University Conservation Society is an environmentally friendly, outdoor-appreciating society that places a strong emphasis on doing worthwhile conservation work whilst having a fun time.
We meet up for weekends away participating ina range of tasks across the picturesque countryside around Newcastle.
What we do
The society undertakes all manner of conservation tasks with the objective of conserving the natural environment and promoting wildlife. The tasks we do vary, but include:
- Coppicing
- Tree and hedge planting
- Scrub bashing
- Hedge laying
- Boardwalk construction
- Woodland management (tree felling!!)
- Fencing
|
 |
Going on a task isn't like being on a boot camp, although you might get a bit muddy! The emphasis is very much on having fun whilst being involved in a rewarding and worthwhile conservation task. Lots of tea and biscuits get |
consumed and on the way home after a task we sometimes off at a country pub for a bit of chill time. |
 |
Where we go
 |
The society works in a number of beautiful locations around the Northumbrian Countryside, the tasks typically being held in nature reserves, parks, woodland sites and areas of special scientific interest. |
When we meet
The society goes on a number of different tasks each term: some are day tasks near Newcastle where we catch the bus or train; or weekend tasks where the sites are further away. In this case we use the University minibus and stay in a local bunkhouse or backpackers for the night before or the night after the task (of course making sure we are next to a local pub!)."
Check out the event diary for more details.

Do I need any experience?
You do not need any experience to become a member of consoc. Everyone is welcome. With a little instruction by existing members, you'll soon pick up skills such as coppicing, hedge laying and dry-stone walling.
What should I bring along?
 |
You'll need warm and waterproof clothing, sturdy footwear and a packed lunch, preferably in a small rucksack style bag as we may sometimes have a few minutes walk to get to the site. If we have a fire we'll get a kettle going, otherwise you may want to bring a warm drink should your caffine addictions match up to those of some of our members.

Socials
Socials take throughout term-time. The society runs some fun social events, and frequents some of the best pubs in Newcastle, hidden gems that you might otherwise never find! Our socials over the last year also included trips botanic gardens, cinemas, out with Durham's conservation society, on the beach, and at cheese and wine / pudding parties.
Socials are also a great place to meet us - you're welcome to come along & get to know more about what we do. If you're not a member and are coming along, do drop us an email first so we can let you know of any changes of plan that haven't been put on the website!
Meeting places for socials vary, so you'll either need to email us or be on our mailing list to find out where we are each week... |
